Position Summary:The Biomedical Services Communications team at American Red Cross national headquarters develops the national communications strategy for our Blood Services both externally and internally. Externally, the team focuses on managing crisis communications, responding to national media inquiries, developing website and social media content, and providing campaign support. Internally, this team also executes broad leadership communication plans for the organization, drafts memos, talking points and FAQs for key initiatives, and develops intranet content.

This position reports to the Director of NHQ Biomedical Services Communications and is centered around supporting the national communications strategy as well as internal communications for a large, dispersed workforce. In addition, this position will be responsible for supervising and managing Communications staff as appropriate, ensuring the delivery of timely and high quality support to key client groups.


External Communications:• Support development of national communications strategy for the Biomedical Services division of the American Red Cross.• Develop external talking points, media Q&A, media statements and social media guidance.• Anticipate and manage crisis communications issues to mitigate reputational risk.• Respond to national media inquiries for Biomedical Services.• Prepare spokespeople for interviews and develop briefing materials.• Work collaboratively to provide strategic guidance for local communicators across the country on issues of reputational risk.

Internal Communications:• Oversee internal communications for key Biomedical Services initiatives including developing a plan, providing strategic counsel, drafting communications materials, leading review process and ensuring delivery to staff.• Develop internal talking points, FAQs, employee memos, presentations, videos, and intranet content for employee communications.• Help improve engagement of Biomedical Services staff through effective and consistent communications


• Education: 4-year college degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related field• Professional Experience: Minimum 7 to 10 years required• Management Experience: Minimum 3 to 5 years of staff management required• Experience in a fast paced &/or regulated environment preferred. • Excellent writing and editing skills, familiarity with Associated Press-style writing.• Confident teammate who can wear both external and internal communications hats.• Ability to write quickly and clearly to respond to emerging issues.• Understand nuances, comfortable working in gray areas – all with the highest personal integrity.• Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment with competing priorities.• Ability to work well with colleagues at all levels, including senior leaders.• Proven track record of communications management and execution to advance business goals. • Strong critical thinking and strategic planning skills to ensure effective communications.• Independent problem solver and self-starter.• Strong organization and project management skills.• Ability to handle occasional irregular and weekend hours.• Familiarity with and commitment to the Red Cross mission.• Spanish fluency a plus.

PLEASE NOTE: This position is located at the American Red Cross Headquarters in Washington, DC and is NOT a remote opportunity. Ideal candidate will be located in the DC Metro area OR be able to relocate to the area on their own and will be comfortable commuting into the DC offices.
