The mission of the Defender program is to ensure that the right to counsel guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment, the Criminal Justice Act (CJA), and other statutory mandates are enforced on behalf of those who cannot afford to retain counsel. The incumbent will serve as an IT Specialist and will report to the Chief of the Administrative Operations Staff (AOS) in the Defender Services Office.

The Defender Services Office (DSO) is responsible for national administration of the U.S. Federal Defender and Appointed Counsel Program. Responsibilities of this office include support of the Defender Services Committee of the Judicial Conference, defining appropriation and individual federal defender organization budget requirements, providing training throughout the country, and assessing individual district CJA programs.

The responsibilities of the AOS encompass all administrative and operational activities that are needed to support the DSO. They range from internal budget formulation and execution to supporting the technical and audio visual needs of national training programs.

Applicants should be knowledgeable about how to operate various pieces of audio visual equipment and understand the support needs associated with planning and executing national training programs. They should possess a high proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and the ability to use database software is critical. Strong verbal communication skills are important as responsibilities are likely to include interacting with staff both inside and outside of the DSO.

The applicant should be self-motivated, and be comfortable working in a team environment that is often fast paced to meet tight deadlines.

Responsibilities
  • Serving as the point of contact for assisting staff with setting up and using AV equipment for onsite meetings, trainings seminars and conferences taking place nationwide.
  • Providing support to staff and assisting with deployment of AV equipment that is shipped nationwide for external meetings and training events.
  • Demonstrating to DSO staff responsible for conferences and training events how to operate the following audio visual equipment: LCD projectors, SHURE microphone systems, VGA splitters, etc.
  • Providing technical support to the databases DSO uses on a daily basis, such as the credential database, the new defender appointment database, Meetingtrak, and all of the other non-standard AO software that DSO uses.
  • Providing assistance for the accountability of national training seminar and conference audio visual equipment. This includes ensuring equipment is maintained with proper updates in accordance with Administrative Office (AO) standards and is properly inventoried.
  • Tuning the SHURE microphone system to the region that the system will be used in for the assigned national training event.
  • Researching equipment and software to support the DSO training division that would help the staff perform their mission more effectively.
  • Assisting in the preparation of materials for training of DSO staff on the use of and assisting in identifying appropriate AO offered training, including JOU (the AOs online university) for staff that travel and support national training efforts when needed.
  • Training staff on the use of SharePoint, the EIO board, remote log in, digital signage. And,
  • Preparing standard operating procedures for equipment inventory, the use of digital signage, equipment preparation and packing, as well as creating and maintaining internal DSO databases.

Qualifications

Applicants must have demonstrated experience as listed below. This requirement is according to the AO Classification, Compensation, and Recruitment Systems which include interpretive guidance and reference to the OPM Operating Manual for Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience which is in or directly related to the line of work of this position. Specialized experience is demonstrated experience inventorying, packing and maintaining audio visual equipment used to support national training programs.
