World Wildlife Fund (WWF, a global conservation organization leader) and CARE (a global women's empowerment and poverty alleviation leader) seek a Graduate Integrated Conservation and Development Intern. The objective of this three-month internship is to support the global CARE-WWF Alliance teams with the background information and analyses needed for a productive global learning event, the lessons of which will both improve implementation of our projects and contribute to a practitioners’ guide for integrating conservation and development interventions and scaling up their impacts.
Climate change is making it more difficult for people in the developing world to escape poverty and protect the natural resources they rely on for food and income. At the same time, too many women are unable to fully participate in the development of their communities and management of their resources. For a decade, the CARE-WWF Alliance has worked, first in Mozambique and now in Tanzania, with women and men in farming and fishing communities, their governments and private sector partners to develop more just and sustainable food systems. Our strategy in east Africa—and where we work together in Nepal—is to empower the poorest and most vulnerable women and their communities to manage natural resources and adapt to climate change in ways that pull them out of poverty and shape local policies and institutions to promote sustainable development and ensure the conservation of biodiversity. CARE and WWF have the expertise and complementary capacities to deliver on our shared vision that the health of the planet and the promise of her people are one and the same.
As a culmination of ten years of work in this strategic partnership, we are planning a global CARE-WWF Alliance learning event in late summer or early fall 2018. This internship will provide a critical analytical foundation to the global learning event, which seeks to facilitate learning exchange amongst practitioners and strengthen the global Alliance’s integrated conservation and development community of practice. In particular, this internship provides vital contributions to the event objective of identifying proven and innovative approaches to integrating conservation and development and to scaling up impacts.
Scope of Work
The Graduate Integrated Conservation and Development Intern will conduct literature reviews and produce annotated bibliographies on peer-reviewed literature and practitioners manuals related to the integration of conservation and development interventions and scaling up of their impacts:
Identify the best literature reviews and other synthesis texts on integrated conservation and development projects. Compile a list of key lessons and recommendations.
Compile an annotated bibliography of CARE and WWF practitioner methodologies and training manuals used by the CARE-WWF Alliance. Supplement the bibliography with the most promising external practitioner guides and training manuals on other interventions used by the Alliance, including but not limited to integrated conservation and development approaches. Perform a gap analysis and synthesize in a brief introduction.
Review relevant literature on scaling up and out. Details to be confirmed, but this will likely include a review of scaling strategies and lessons from a limited number of fields, such as community conservation, women’s empowerment, small-scale agriculture, public health and communications.
Exact due dates negotiable, but at least one draft deliverable due by June 14 and all deliverables finalized by August 3, 2018:
Consolidated list and PowerPoint presentation of key lessons and recommendations from integrated conservation and development projects, including short annotated bibliography of the go-to literature reviews on the topic.
Annotated bibliography of CARE, WWF and others’ practitioners’ guides and training manuals applied in or applicable to Alliance work, highlighting the strengths of each. Introduce the bibliography by synthesizing cross-cutting gaps to which the Alliance could meaningfully contribute.
A literature review and PowerPoint presentation of key lessons, recommendations and strategies for scaling up and out conservation and development interventions and impacts.
Required skills sets and recommended experience:
Clear, concise writer with good verbal communications skills.
Independent, self-starter who is proactive about asking for guidance, as needed.
Experience performing desk research and writing literature reviews and a desire to inform project implementation through accessible summaries of evidence and lessons.
The ideal candidate is in the process of earning a Masters degree or PhD in International Development, Environmental Science, Rural Sociology, Public Health, Public Policy or a related field. The candidate must be eligible to earn credits (up to three) for this summer research internship and should be available to begin work in May with the team in Washington, DC or Atlanta, GA; candidates based in other locations may apply, but the start month is less flexible.
Familiarity with the following a plus: key concepts and/or interventions in relevant areas, such as rights-based approaches, sustainability, natural resource management, gender and women’s empowerment; and developing country contexts, especially east Africa.

Compensation: Unpaid. For all unpaid internships, applicants must be enrolled in school and be able to obtain academic course credit from their university.
