American University Assistant Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (14585) in Washington, District Of Columbia

Summary/Objective

The Assistant Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, is a senior administrative position that reports to the, Vice President of Campus Life and Inclusive Excellence (who is responsible for leading institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at the Cabinet level). This critical position partners closely with key university offices and groups to provide strategic leadership for the oversight, implementation and ongoing evaluation of the University’s Plan for Inclusive Excellenc*e* and to advance a campus culture and climate where all community members experience a sense of belonging, community and satisfaction on the campus.

Essential Functions

  • Provide leadership and oversight for the implementation, monitoring, and updating of American University’s Plan for Inclusive Excellence
  • In partnership with Human Resources, Academic Affairs, and Office of Campus Life, develop and support university-wide learning and development initiatives aimed at demonstrating cultural competency to reduce bias and foster diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Provide leadership to promote and advocate for a diverse and an inclusive campus climate and culture, using best practices. Use methods and metrics appropriate for measuring climate change
  • Champion improvements in AU’s systems, policies and procedures to facilitate equity and inclusion. Provide transparency, promote fairness and enhance accountability
  • Collaborate on efforts to transform the way we recruit, hire, train, develop, evaluate and recognize AU faculty, staff and administrators to encourage the achievement of our diversity, equity and inclusion goals
  • Advise on instructional methodologies to advance a holistic and inclusive core curriculum for students that demonstrates AU’s values of critical inquiry, intellectual engagement and respectful discourse across diverse perspectives
  • Coordinate, support and network with the various diversity and inclusion-related advisory bodies and groups within the university’s internal and external communities to advance institutional goals
  • Advise on institutional data and reporting to ensure the appropriate measures and regular progress reporting of diversity initiatives. Work collaboratively with the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment
  • Work with appropriate stakeholders to develop a communication strategy and create diversity-related content to share across channels with internal and external audiences

Supervisory Responsibility

  • There is no direct supervisory responsibility for the position

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Position requires regular evening and weekend work in addition to regular office hours, Monday through Friday
  • 35-Exempt

Travel

  • Limited travel

Required Education and Experience

  • Master's degree
  • 10+ years of relevant experience

  • Experience leading, developing and managing change

  • Experience leading and managing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in a university setting

Preferred Education and Experience

  • PhD, fields include women or gender studies, education, intercultural communication, sociology or anthropology
